A return to programming

I thought about this for a while, found it nearly impossible to cram what I was thinking into 140 characters and felt that facebook wasn’t really the right place either, then I remembered I had this little wordpress account deely, so here goes, who knows, if i enjoy it I might do it more often.

Right, so i’m sat here on a pretty dull tuesday evening, annoyed im still stuck in a min wage job but happy i’ve got 48 hours off.  But what to do with this time, I reinstalled some old versions of Command and Conquor and Red Alert to hopefully pass the time, and bought some batteries for my Wiimote to continue plowing through Donkey Kong country 1 and 2 (I dont like 3) on the virtual console.  It was while installing Red Alert 2: Yuris revenge I think when it really dawned on me, the reason (or at least contributing factor) why I am still ‘stuck’ in this job; i’d given up on programming!

After long shifts at work it can be hard to find the motivation to do anything productive, and this really must change I think if I am to get back on track so to speak.  I have no real experience using any language in the ‘real world’, my strengths lie in programming theory and problem solving, sometimes I would rather not write the code once i’ve worked out the problem, alas that is not really possible in this ‘real world’.

I feel lost, I dont know what area / language(s) to focus on anymore, I suppose the future really still is in web programming and that is the place to focus my skills, but I do worry about the effort I have previously put into learning Java and more recently C# (though they are pretty much the same from what ive seen)

I have not really decided what to do yet, all I know is I miss it, and I intend to get back to it asap, at the very least it might show a prospective employer I have done more than just complete Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2.

  1. If you just focus on Java and C# you will be ok. C# is still being used to program for the web. Maybe buy some books on the latest iterations to see what has changed since you stopped. I actually just started and have a job as an applications developer. Good luck to you.
